Happy Birthday Elise! Tomorrow you turn one and as I’m thinking about this milestone, and it’s a big one, I’m also thinking how far you’ve come this past year. You were my surprise baby, my second twin girl and what a scare you gave us. You looked so chubby and perfect–except for that darn lack of breathing. Finally getting to hold you after a day (!) was so bittersweet. I sang to you and told you what a fighter you were destined to be, named both after the abundance of God and Charles the Great. We share warrior root names, you and I. And you have done your names proud. You have an abundance of joy that spills over your face when you laugh and you are so physical and fearless I have to fear for you. You practically jump out of my arms in the morning, so eager are you to explore your world. You and your big sister Maia are trouble makers that keep this household on its toes. But you always brighten my day with your ability find joy in every movement your body makes and every sound you can squeak out of that impressively loud voice of yours. It’s a joy when you slow down for a snuggle or roll over in bed with a lovie and a paci. I am already gearing up to keeping up with the walking running you soon to come. I hope you continue your fearless exploration of the world, because the world will be better for knowing you, my dear warrior girl. I love you with all of my heart, your mommy Elise is a “…big girl baby crawler stander.” And because Maia is the big sister she should know. For the record, while traveling back from Idaho 3 days ago, we were sitting in a booth eating brunch in Burns, Oregon. Elise was sitting next to me on the bench while I fed her bits of pancakes. She started getting a bit wrestless but wasn’t so interested in trying to slide off the bench under the table, so I only had half an eye on her. Valerie suddenly exclaims, “look at Elise!” and I half expect she was about to slide off the bench, but, instead she’s standing next to me, hands on the table, with a big-ole-grin of happiness. Her first time every pulling up on to her footsies without any assistance.
Elise has wheels. Her crawling skills have improved and she’s added the effortless move from crawling to sitting and back again. She can tear through the house and end up–who knows where? I pulled out the little walker cart to give her something to climb on and she’s enjoying that. We also played a little game of “stand and hold onto the couch” which she thought was fun, but not as fun a crawling. The funniest (for me in a mean mom way) part is when she wants me and cries as she crawls to where I am. It looks like she’s lost in the desert…looking for an oasis. The downside is she is no longer content to sit in the stroller (or car seat or on the changing table) and just look about. She wants out/down and into whatever she can get her paws on. We’re leaving for our “all girls road trip” at the end of the week and I’m nervous about having her in the car for as many hours as we’ll need to be. I’m sure she’s not going to be happy. I plan on leaving early and hopefully all the girls will sleep for the first big push. Then we’ll take it easy and stop early enough in the day to get her and her sisters some needed exercise. We’ll make it through. I will say, it’s much more interesting around her with our little scooter. Now that Elsie is almost 10 months I should post the results of her 9-month check up with Dr. Rose. Dr. Rose hadn’t seen the girls since their 2-month check up. As soon as she walked in she said, “They don’t look like the same babies!” I would have to agree. They have grown up so much in the past three months even. I look back at their tiny baby pictures and-wow-these girls have grown. Quick stats: Weight: 18#5oz puts her into the 45 percentile Height: 27 1/4″ puts her into the 35 percentile Head Circumfrence: 17 3/8″ puts her into the 50 percentile Elise is perfect, small but growing just fine. She loves to blow raspberries (which Maia call’s “blowing chickens” for a reason known only to her). She say’s mamamamama and dadadadadadada and all kinds of other fun vocalizations. She loves to laugh. She likes to be tickled and her smile will light up a room. She’s a good little snuggle bunny for about 2 minutes then she wants down to roll and explore. She’s good in the stroller and likes the swing at the playground but is not sure about the sand. Everything goes into her mouth. Even food. She’s having four bottles (24-28oz) and about three meals a day. Elise is great with her fine pincer grasp and likes to self feed. We just started on the sippy cup and she seems to get the concept. She would like the spoon to begin feeding herself, but I’m waiting just a bit longer on that one. I’m not ready to give it up yet. Elise loves finger foods and will eat about anything put in front of her. She’s really been enjoying the summer fruits. Watermelon is an especial favorite right now. Next check happens just after her first birthday. I am astounded that we’ve come this far. I love my little Elise and am looking forward to watching her meet her next few milestones. There will be 20 posts about teeth. Just to let you know. Elise has popped her upper left canine tooth. Looks like she’s working on the right one as well. She’ll be my little vampire child until her front ones come in. Cute! It’s official. Life as we *currently* know it is over. Friday morning, June 26, Elise became a crawler. I’m thinking her “lazy baby” status is much like Maia’s. She just doesn’t do things until she can do them. She doesn’t spend much time in the pre-stages, I guess is what I’m saying. Friday morning after changing her diaper I was watching her get up on her knees one moment and the next she had taken three little steps forward on hands and knees. Today, just over a week later, she came scooting out of the playroom (looking for lunch I think) slap-slaping her little hands across the floor with knees not far behind. She can go several feet now and it will only get, um, better? from this point on. Now I have to hurry up on a better baby-proof of the house. Elsie is a very mouthy child. After her crawl across the living room floor I managed to pull a cat-hair wad (ick) and a rubber door stopper out of her mouth. Sigh. So this is what “normal” babies are like. Some photographic evidence of the toothed smile is in order. These were taken Saturday, 2 days ago. Everything is still hand to mouth. Yes, I do have 2 teeth there. But, what’s all the fuss? And, yes, Elise still has her full body smile. One day, she’s going to out grow it. Hopefully no time soon. Hard to beleive the kids are 8 months old already. These are in the 8-month gallery. More to come there eventually… Yup. Elise popped her second tooth Tuesday. And her first one is going strong…she now has that one-almost-two toothed grin. She really is an adorable baby. It’s funny how I like to assign characteristics to Elsie and Stella. Stella seems very much like the middle child…active and trying to keep up with the big kids…while Elise seems like the baby of the family…content to let the big kids do for her. While she isn’t trying to move like Stella, Elsie is developing her own very sweet “big girl” talents. Elise sits. And sits very well. I do put a pillow behind her in case she falls, but most times she’ll sit and play until she gets tired, then cry until I lay her down again. She loves to sit and mouth toys. Then reach for her toes or just watch Maia play. I’ve taken to giving her larger toys that she can manipulate as she sits. She loves this little play set we have and she’s figuring out the sorting boxes and bead puzzle. She sits. And is quite happy. Today I had her on the kitchen floor just laying there and she was highly entertained by watching me wash dishes and talk to John and just go about our business. She’s a watcher and observer. My favorite thing in the world is when she seeing something that makes her smile, because she still has the full body smile of her tiny infant-hood. That’s something I hope she never loses. |
